Having a complete healthy diet has many parts to it. Eating organic produce is one of them, but one must also not forget to have a balanced and varied diet. Consuming more fruits and vegetables is key to having a healthy lifestyle, but one must also pay close attention to your pH levels.

pH is the measurement for how acidic or alkaline something is. Human pH level is best when it is slightly alkaline, around 7.4 is the optimum pH value. Although a healthy pH can be anywhere around 6.0 to 7.5. Meat, coffee, milk, cheese, alcohol, pasta and many other popular food products are highly acidic, to counter balance this, one must include more alkaline foods into their diet. A healthy diet should consist of 70% alkaline-forming foods and 30% acid-forming foods.

Acid-forming foods, makes it hard to bring our blood pH levels back into balance. When we lack alkaline-forming foods, our body extracts alkaline rich minerals from our bones and organs to balance the pH levels. This can then compromise our immune system and make us more vulnerable to diseases.

People with high acidic diets tend to provide a favorable environment for the growth of yeast, fungus and cancer. That is why an alkaline diet is highly recommend to people suffering from cancer or that have undergone chemotherapy.

Hacks to Keep Groceries Fresh for Longer

Keeping food fresh is not always easy, specially when produce is organic and does not contain any artificial or chemical preservatives that conventional and industrial agriculture uses. However there is always an optimal method of keeping groceries at their best and preserving the nutrition.

Here is a list of hacks to Keep Groceries Fresh for Longer.



1. Tomatoes – Do not refrigerate them. Tomatoes should never go in the fridge, it will make them tasteless and loose their juiciness. Keep them at room temperature but away from sunlight.



2. Avocados – Let them ripen at room temperature. Avocados should not ripen in the fridge, keep them at room temperature, if you want to accelerate the ripening process close them up in some paper bags. When ripe you should keep them in the fridge. Once you have cut it open, best thing is to put it on a plate without the skin and squeeze some lemon on top and keep it in the fridge, this will help oxidation and darkening.



3. Apples – Keep them away from everything else except Potatoes. Apples produce Ethylene gas naturally, which will help oxidize and spoil everything else much quicker. Keep them them n a plastic bag in the fridge and away from the fruit bowl. Ethylene gas however does prevent Potatoes from sprouting, so you might want to put some apples with your potato stash.



4. Potatoes – Keep them in a dry, cool dark place and away from Onions. Keep them away form humidity and sunlight and never store them next to onions they both emit gases that will accelerate their spoilage. Don’t keep them in the fridge either as this will turn some starches into sugars.



5. Berries – wash them with vinegar. Berries go bad pretty quick so wash them in a bowl of water with half a cup of vinegar. It will kill mold and bacteria. Dry them before storing in the fridge.



6. Herbs – treat them like Flowers. Put them in a glass with some water. They will last longer and even grow a bit more. Some can even develop roots and can be planted in soil to grow even more.



7. Bananas – Keep them together. Do not separate bananas until you need to eat them they will ripen more slowly like this.



8. Bread – Freeze it. Bread that does not contain any preservatives will go grow mould fast. If you freeze it will last months and you can always take a slice out and toast it like if it was made in the same day.



10. Mushrooms – in paper bags. Mushrooms like it dry so keep them in the fridge in paper bags which will help absorb humidity. If they get get to dry you can always dip them in water bit and they will bounce back up.

The term ‘organic’ has been prostituted through trends, fashion and giants of the industry exploiting a new demand, thus making us forget what it really encompasses. It’s not just about pesticide free food, it’s about respecting the earth, the farmers, those who work day and night making sure the crops harvest – it’s about not exploiting, manipulating or damaging.


In Bellaria everything is made with conscience. The sugars we use have never been refined: we work with dates, coconut sugar, stevia and panela so you can enjoy your treats without fear. Everything is gluten free, but that’s not all: we don’t work with corn as it’s difficult for the body to digest. We only use sprouted buckwheat flour, quinoa or wholegrain rice. We sprout our legumes and activate our nuts and seeds to remove the enzyme inhibitors – that way you can absorb all their goodness. We make our own nut mylks and sweeten them with dates and superfoods such as lúcuma. We don’t work with soy or margarine. Margarine because it’s highly chemical – we use coconut oil instead; and soy for various reasons: it promotes environmental destruction, it has a component very similar to oestrogen thus producing hormonal imbalance and contains phytic acid, which prevents the absorption of nutrients.


It’s not easy knowing how to eat. We’ve been badly educated many years’ through institutions financed by food industries that depend on our consumption to succeed. That, my dear, is what I define as a conflict of interest. It’s never too late to make changes, especially when you can count on small fighters such as Bellaria and Los Hortelanos to ensure the best of the earth comes straight to your home completely guilt free

This is the first organic recipe post. As food lovers that we are, we like to share with you what happens in our kitchen. The Purple Juice is a breakfast classic for us. This is a classic recipe that is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, a big jug of Purple Juice is a great start to the day and gives you all the energy need. The process is very simple, you will need a juicer and a jug. Just blend all the ingredients in the juicer or food processor give it a stir and drink quickly.

Ingredients (1 jug)

  • 1 Beetroot (Also stalks)
  • 1 Apple
  • 3 Carrots
  • 2 Small Oranges
  • Small Piece of Ginger
  • 1/2 Lemon

We recommend to drink it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. That way all the nutrients and vitamins are absorbed easier by the body. We always recommend that the produce be organic when juicing.

Organic Chilies

It must have only been 4 or 5 years ago when started getting interested about health and food. Previous to these years my persona was pretty much like that of an average mainstream consumer of my generation. I was naive to think that FDA or food regulation organisms would allow dangerous foods to be sold to the masses. As a young kid i had been thought by TV and mainstream culture to love MacDonalds, frozen lasagna and what not. However food was pretty healthy at home i must say and I was never to much into fizzy drinks or sweets, so i was kind of lucky there. However popular culture and my own ignorance had me on a path that was unhealthy, excessive and damaging to my soul and body.

About 4 years my mother was diagnosed with high risk breast cancer. It was not easy to go through it all, I witnessed the fear, the chemo and all its symptoms. Being an IT professional I spent countless hours doing my research into the subject to learn how to beat this disease and how one can recover from it. Thats where i learnt about sugar and processed foods being such an important agents for the occurrence of cancer. I learnt that multinational companies make huge profits from sugar because of its addictive properties. Moreover i learnt that the food industry is completely manipulated by private interests and that governments are involved in aiding these multinationals and that there is little care about the general health of the population. I learnt about agrochemical companies such as Monsanto and their threat to the survival of our ecosystem through its genetic, chemical and seed patent products.

I also learnt that there is great food out there, and that anyone can grow it. I learnt about organic farming, permaculture, superfoods, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, alternative medicine and the importance of local economics. I learnt that there is a huge amount of people that are demanding this change to the food industry and that there is a whole economy growing around health and sustainability throughout the planet. I learnt that sustainability is the only way forward, and that it is only a matter of time everybody realizes this. I also learnt that it was up to the people that really care to make this change happen.

Letting go of old habits and changing your lifestyle is never an easy task. It takes a lot from one self and it is always easy to fall back into those old cues and thoughts. Since the time of my research i have been on a personal mission to become healthier and learn as much as i can about food, health and sustainability and share it with everyone I can.

It also became my dream to help make local and organic food more accessible to the mainstream market and be part of this change which the world needs. This brought me to develop the concept of Los Hortelanos as an online e-commerce platform that connects local farmers and food artisans to their consumers. Taking care of all the technological, logistics and marketing aspects which are needed to reach the masses and selecting only the best local, organic health food products, as well as advocating for fair trade, sustainable agricultural practices. In general our mission would be to help farmers and food artisans sell more so that they can focus on growing food for all of us.
